Fibers and Sprays to Cover
Hair Loss
Why consider fibers
to cover hair loss?
Fibers can actually work
as advertised to conceal thinning scalps. These fibers
come in containers that look like pepper shakers, when
sprayed to the scalp, adheere to the bases of the hair
follicles to add bulk to the hair shaft. The fibers
adhere more securely with a follow up fixing spray.
It is a simple process and the result can look dramatic
in the transformation of the head of hair.

How
fiber for hair loss works
The
better known fiber products are Toppik and XFusion.
The fibers are made of keratin, which
is of similar chemical make up as our human hair. You
apply the product by spraying, painting, or sprinkling
it on your scalp. The fibers cling to your existing
hair and give the impression that the hair is thicker
and fuller. The fibers stick to the original hair by
static electricity. You can remove them with a thorough
hair wash.
Choose
the color that matches your hair. The fiber adheres
on to the fine vellus hair by static electricity. It
only works if there is some hair for the fibers to adhere
to. If you are bald it could work after a hair transplant
to provide some hair for the fibers to adhere to.
How
well does fiber stand up to the elements
- Light
rain won't wash off the fiber but heavy rain could.
Don't swim with the fiber exposed.
- The
static electricity should be able to hold the fibers
against strong winds.
- Sweating
and running your fingers through the hair could dislodge
the fibers.
Generally
these fibers can hold against fairly mild elements.
The
routine with the fiber cover up
This
is only a short term solution and requires discipline
to present a head that appears to have a healthy cover
all the time. It becomes part of a time consuming daily
routine. As you become more bald, there is less hair
to act as the base for adherence. It then could call
for a hair transplant exercise. In this respect low
level laser therapy is a better alternative because
you don't surprise your friends if the elements expose
the fibers or you break your routine for a couple of
days.
