Diseases that Cause Hair Loss

• Non-permanant hair loss or non-scarring alopecia. These include alopecia areata seen as circular bald spots, and telogen effluvium seen as sudden widespread hair shedding. Common among children is tinea capitis, a fungal infection. Diseases of the thyroid gland also causes temporary hair loss. Several other serious illnesses also cause hair loss under the non-scarring category.
• Permanent hair loss or scarring alopecia. These are also called cicatricia alopecia.
• Lupus, an autoimmune disease can be both scarring and non-scarring.
• As a side effect, several medications also cause hair loss.
• Other diseases that cause hair loss include tearing at the hair as an obsessive complulsive disorder, prolonged hair pulling and the side effect of chemotherapy.
