The Latest Hair Transplantation
Technique - Follicular Unit Extraction
Follicular
Unit Extraction (FUE) involves the surgical removal
of individual follicular units without making a linear
donor incision and without removing the donor scalp
in strips. This technique is the result of a long process
of surgical hair transplant refinement.
The
process involves extracting individual follicular units
directly from the donor area with a punch of less than
1 mm in size. This is a refinement over the old method
of punching out many follicular units in a single graft.
In FUE only a single follicular unit of between one
and four hairs is removed from the scalp.
The
advantages of FUE are:
- The
donor wounds are small and are able to close on their
own without sutures or staples.
- Since
the scars are small, they are not easily detectable.
- Post-surgery
discomfort is minimal.
- Full
normal pysical activities can be resumed within a
week.
The
disadvantages of FUE are:
- It
is a tedious procedure and hence expensive, more than
for strip harvesting.
- And
it takes more time to accomplish.
More
details about FUE and other methods of hair harvesting
can be obtained in the book, "Hair Loss & Replacement
for Dummies" by William R. Rassman, et al, published
by Wiley, 2008.
