THE
SIZES OF HAIR TRANSPLANT GRAFTS |
The Relevance of Hair
Transplant Graft Sizes
The
smaller the graft, the more natural looking it is. Doctors
began decreasing the size of hair grafts more specifically
because of the following disadvantages of large hair
grafts:
- Before
the hair grows in, large hair grafts are more visible
as ggrafts during the transition period after transplantation.
The skin deformities are more visible.
- When
the hair is combed back or to the side, the large
hair grafts in the frontal hairline look pluggy and
unnatural. Patients therefore have to comb forward
to hide this problem.
- Large
hair grafts placed behind the hairline or in the crown
look like bumpy, patchy clumps of hair. These are
very difficult to disguise.
- The
grafts contract during the healing process. This pushes
the hairs in the graft together, increasing the density
of hair within the graft. Again this contribute to
the pluggy, stalk-like appearance of traditional grafts.
- Multiple
transplant repairs are often further needed to achieve
more natural look. Until the work is complete, the
appearance will look very unnatural.
More
energy is required to feed the hair follicle cells than
other cells. If the graft is too large, the cells at
the center could die before the sufficient oxegen and
nutrients can reach them. You may end up having a doughnut
configuration with the hair at the periphery looking
healthy and the center looking bald.
There
are disadvantages of small grafts:
- It
takes longer to cover the same sized area with smaller
grafts.
- Smaller
hair grafts have a thinner hair appearance, so more
grafts are needed to achieve a natural look.
