HOW
TO MAINTAIN HEALTHY HAIR |
Learning to Maintain
a Healthy Head of Hair
Having
a Healthy Scalp
Healthy
hair is supported by healthy blood supply to the roots
underneath the scalp. Using good shampoo and conditioner
will help keep the scalp area healthy and encourages
hair growth. The
reason low level laser therapy works for hair growth
is that it stimulates activity in the cells relevant
to supporting hair growth, as well as keeping them healthy.
However,
there are certain activities that are unhealthy for
the scalp and hence creating hair loss:
- Repeated
sun exposure. The sun can burn your scalp
with the strong ultraviolet rays (sunburn). It causes
the hair producing cells to shrink, and eventually
the loss of hair. It is good to wear a hat but even
then the high temperature underneath the hat can still
damage the hair like a hot hair dryer. That helps
explains why a large number of golfers have balding
heads.
- Smoking.
Some studies have shown that smoking reduces blood
circulation to the scalp. The more you smoke, the
greater the accumulation of this effect.
- Skin
conditions. A variety of skin conditions
can affect the scalp. Learn
more of diseases that cause hair loss from the relevant
page.
- Chlorine
and salt water. You may notice that frequent
swimmers either in the swimming pool or the sea, show
weak and discolored hair. Heavy chlorine exposure
makes the hair vulnerable and salt dry the scalp.
Shampooing and conditioning the hair helps to alleviate
this problem.
- Folliculitis.
This is an infection of the hair follicles, exhibiting
itself as acne or red or white bumps on the scalp.
It may be treated with soaks and antibiotics. Picking
and scratching can permanently damage the hair. Folliculitis
seldom cause permanent hair loss but may cause the
hair to enter into telogen or "sleep" mode.
Dandruff
is not a cause of permanent hair loss. It can be a sign
of an unhealthy scalp, so proper maintenance of the
hair with the appropriate shampoo and conditioner can
help create the conditions for a healthy scalp.
