The Side Effects of
Minoxidil (Rogaine)
What are the side effects
of minoxidil?
The most common side
effect of topical minoxidil is local irritation although
the foam formula is less so.
Some women grow facial
hair. This effect decreases upon cessation of the treatment
although some may require hair removal procedures such
as electrolysis or laser hair removal. Therefore, women
who apply topical minoxidil to the scalp should be careful
about not allowing the solution to drip down the forehead.
You may suffer hair growth in areas of the face where
you do not want.
It has also been found
that female patients are more sensitive to the potential
systemic side effects of minoxidil in decreasing blood
pressure, a condition called hypotension. In rare cases,
this can cause light headedness. Women also have a greater
risk of developing allergic skin reaction.
Minoxidil can cause birth
defects. This medication should be avoided by pregnant
women or those planning to get pregnant.
